Dougy's Best of 2013: Songs #18
Empire of the Sun - "Alive"

"Alive" was the first taste of Empire of the Sun's return, Ice on the Dune.  For those who are unfamiliar with the Australian electronic duo, they gained success off their debut album, Walking on a Dream, in 2008.  "Walking on a Dream" and "We Are The People" were modest hits, but it was the group's theatrical live show that helped them establish an international fan base.  The song's fist-pumping beat and life-affirming chorus are a perfect fit for modern Top 40 and I'm honestly a little surprised this song isn't any bigger.  In a crowded year for "songs of the summer" this one still found it's way toward the top.

Queens of the Stone Age - "My God Is The Sun"

This is one of those rock songs that make you turn up the radio and drive faster than necessary.  This has been in heavy rotation since Queens of the Stone Age debuted this song at Lollapalooza Brazil in April.   Dave Grohl pounds away behind the drums, while Josh Homme wails about the sun and roads to nowhere.  The song was a welcomed return to the desert rocker's younger, more charged days.
