Recap #2 Fantasy Box Office Q3: Gravity soars, Bad Grandpa shakes it up

To review the first half of Q3 (August - October), click here.

Leader Board
1. John Strand (3/3*) - 18 Points
2. Mike Even (2/3) - 8 Points
3. Luke Smith (1/3) - 4 Points
4. Charlie Tritschler (1/3) - 2 Points
5. Matt O'Keefe (0/3) - 0 Points
6. John Sheppard (1/3) - 0 Points

After the first half of this third quarter (August-October), it quickly became apparent that fewer points would be scored than during the summer months. John Strand was sitting at top with 18 points with everyone pretty evenly matched, despite both Jobs and The World's End scoring zero points. There were two stat corrections, 2 Guns and Elysium both earned 8 points instead of 6.

PERSON: Matt O'Keefe
ROTTEN TOMATOES SCORE: 79% = 4x

SCORE: 8 Points

SEPTEMBER 23RD NOTES: Matt O'Keefe has his first pick and gets on the leader board with an impressive eight points. That is pretty good considering Prisoners was the final pick of the draft (18th). Matt is now tied with Mike Even at 2nd.  1. John Strand (18*) // 2. Mike Even (8*) // 2. Matt O'Keefe (8) // 4. Luke Smith (4) // 5. Charlie Tritschler (2) // 6. John Sheppard (0)

MOVIE: Don Jon
PERSON: Charlie Tritschler

MOVIE: Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs 2
PERSON: Matt O'Keefe
ROTTEN TOMATOES SCORE: 59% = 3x
BOX OFFICE GROSS: $34.3 = 3 Points
SCORE: 9 Points

SEPTEMBER 30TH NOTES: Mike Even's third movie, Runner, Runner scores zero points and he ends the quarter with 8. Charlie is unable to add to his 2 points from Kick-Ass 2 with Don Jon. Despite being a hit with the critics, its limited release hurt its box office intake and it scores zero. O'Keefe adds to his Prisoners total with 9 points from Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs 2 to take over second place. 1. John Strand (18*) // 2. Matt O'Keefe (17) // 3. Mike Even (8*) // 4. Luke Smith (4) // 5. Charlie Tritschler (2) // 6. John Sheppard (0)

MOVIE: Gravity
PERSON: Matt O'Keefe
ROTTEN TOMATOES SCORE: 97% = 10x
BOX OFFICE GROSS: $55.7 = 5 Points
SCORE: 50 Points

OCTOBER 7TH NOTES: Wow. Gravity is both the highest total points and Rotten Tomatoes score that we have had. Matt blows away the competition and assures himself a spot in the next quarter. 1. Matt O'Keefe (67*) // 2. John Strand (18*) // 3. Mike Even (8*) // 4. Luke Smith (4) // 5. Charlie Tritschler (2) // 6. John Sheppard (0)

MOVIE: Machete Kills
PERSON: Luke Smith
ROTTEN TOMATOES SCORE: 30% = 2x
BOX OFFICE GROSS: $3.8 = 0 Points
SCORE: 0 Points

MOVIE: Captain Phillips
PERSON: John Sheppard
ROTTEN TOMATOES SCORE: 94% = 5x
BOX OFFICE GROSS: $26.0 = 2 Points
SCORE: 10 Points

OCTOBER 14TH NOTES: Machete Kills was the first overall pick and it didn't score any points. Luke still has 4 points from Planes, but he is going to need Carrie to do big on the 18th if he wants to continue next quarter. John Sheppard finally gets on the board with an impressive 10 points from Captain Phillips.  1. Matt O'Keefe (67*) // 2. John Strand (18*) // 3. John Sheppard (10) // 4. Mike Even (8*) // 5. Luke Smith (4) // 6. Charlie Tritschler (2)

OCTOBER 15TH NOTES: John Sheppard's last pick, Oldboy, had its release date pushed back into Q4. Mike Even offered to trade John his 8 Points for 2 Guns for his free pick. Sheppard accepted and Mike chose Bad Grandpa, to be released October 25.  1. Matt O'Keefe (67*) // 2. John Strand (18*) // 2. John Sheppard (18*) // 4. Luke Smith (4) // 5. Charlie Tritschler (2) // 6. Mike Even (0)

MOVIE: Carrie
PERSON: Luke Smith
ROTTEN TOMATOES SCORE: 48% = 3x
BOX OFFICE GROSS: $16.1 = 1 Point
SCORE: 3 Points

OCTOBER 21ST NOTES: Luke's final movie scores him 3 more points. At this point, he is in the playoffs unless The Counselor or Bad Grandpa can score over 7 points. 1. Matt O'Keefe (67*) // 2. John Strand (18*) // 2. John Sheppard (18*) // 4. Luke Smith (7*) // 5. Charlie Tritschler (2) // 6. Mike Even (0)

MOVIE: The Counselor
PERSON: Charlie Tritschler
ROTTEN TOMATOES SCORE: 35% = 2x
BOX OFFICE GROSS: $8.0 = 0 Points
SCORE: 0 Points

MOVIE: Bad Grandpa
PERSON: Mike Even
ROTTEN TOMATOES SCORE: 62% = 4x
BOX OFFICE GROSS: $32.0 = 3 Points
SCORE: 12 Points

OCTOBER 29TH COMMENTS: The Counselor flops and scores a goose egg and leaves Charlie ending the quarter with 2 points. Mike Even traded his points from 2 Guns for Bad Grandpa and I can't believe how well it paid off. All 12 of Mike's quarterly points came from Bad Grandpa, further proof that today's audiences are more brand-driven than ever. Congratulations Michael, you deserve this photo:

Leader Board
1. Matt O'Keefe - 67 Points
2. John Strand - 18 Points
2. John Sheppard - 18 Points
4. Mike Even - 12 Points
5. Luke Smith - 7 Points
6. Charlie Tritschler - 2 Points

********************************************

Highest Score
Highest Rotten Tomatoes Percentage
Highest Box Office Revenue
GRAVITY
Gravity is a pretty rare blockbuster that is both critically acclaimed and a box office draw. Blowing past Fast and Furious 6's record-setting 36 points, it looks to be a while before anything can top Gravity.

Lowest Rotten Tomato Score
RUNNER, RUNNER

Runner, Runner's 7% Rotten Tomatoes score is the lowest we've had, passing by R.I.P.D.'s abysmal 10% in July.

Lowest Box Office Gross
MACHETE KILLS

Machete Kills was the first overall pick, but it only brought in $3.8 million.

Lowest Points Scored
JOBS
THE WORLD'S END
RUNNER, RUNNER
DON JON
MACHETE KILLS
THE COUNSELOR

Both The World's End and Don Jon had the critical score to earn points, but limited releases held them to making less than $10.0 million. Jobs, Runner, Runner, Machete Kills and The Counselor all suffered from low Rotten Tomato scores and little audience interest.

2013 Q3 MVP
MIKE EVEN

This was tough to give out. I want to applaud Matt O'Keefe for making solid picks, but he did have the upper-hand since he played last quarter. Both John Sheppard and John Strand secured their spots with dependable movies but each of them missed the opportunity to draft Gravity (actually everyone did). Charlie is out of the running since he only scored 2 points and I cannot honor Machete Kills as a first pick (sorry Luke!). I'm giving this award to Mike Even. Although we teased him for picking Jobs (in the first round?!) and Runner, Runner, I didn't expect 2 Guns to perform so well and we thought he was insane for trading away his points for Bad Grandpa, but it worked! Although he only eeked by, he brought trading to the game and therefore is the Most Valuable Player to Fantasy Box Office!

Stay tuned next week! We'll announce the next batch of movies drafted. Hunger Games! Thor! The Hobbit!
