TFR: Tap’s Fantasy Report Week 5
Here at SnoTap, we will be helping you weekly throughout the football season. We will recap what happens each week on Tuesday, and also give you some advice on how to use these happenings to win your league. If you have any questions, put them in the comments below, or email SnoTap12@gmail.com, and we will answer them in a future post.
Tony Romo: This is going to be a half fantasy, half real life football analysis. Yes, he threw a critical interception late, but his performance before that pass is why you give Tony Romo a chance. There are maybe 15 people alive that can put up the type of numbers he had in football game. Cowboys fans and fantasy owners alike should be glad that Romo can do these types of things, and thus should put up with the errors. In the next few weeks, it’s likely that Romo will have a tough few games, and the media will get on his case about not being reliable enough to win a Super Bowl, but there will be gems in the near future, make sure you catch them.
Montee Ball: If you own Montee Ball, and are not in a 16 plus team league, or in a non-dynasty league, you should probably be cutting him soon. It’s clear that if Ball has any fantasy value, it is in the not so near future. It’s fine to be a week late to the breakout performance as well. Don’t get too cute trying to predict when he has his first big week. Denver is hard to predict, let him show you something first. Don’t let his preseason ranking trick you into over valuing him. He might have some value this week against Jacksonville in garbage time, but it doesn’t increase his value long term.
Frank Gore: Since the 49ers have been on prime time numerous times so far this season, I have had the opportunity to watch more of their games than usual. I agree with most commentators from their games, this team is at its best when Frank Gore is running well. As the season progresses, I can see Gore getting more work, and the offensive line for the 49ers getting better. It’s unlikely that Gore will end up having a top 5 fantasy performance, but in a year with unpredictable results at the running back position, he’s a good player to have in your lineup.
Andre Johnson: If you are an Andre Johnson owner, trade him this week. Try to get a receiver with a situation a bit more reliable than the Texans. A quarterback controversy is never a good thing to be around, and it looks like one might be coming in Houston. We all know that Matt Schaub is a better quarterback than TJ Yates, but for some reason, he’s not playing like it. If Schaub keeps throwing passes to the other team, Houston will have to start Yates, and who knows how Yates will perform. The Texans will likely get back to running the ball more, and the chemistry that Schaub and Johnson have together will no longer be beneficial. If there’s someone in your league willing to give you a top 15 wide receiver for Johnson, pull the trigger.
Justin Blackmon: This is the highest Blackmon’s value will be this season. If you held onto him waiting for a breakout performance, this is what you were hoping for. Before people in your league remember that he plays for the Jaguars, I would try shopping Blackmon. See if you could pick up someone like Roddy White or Percy Harvin. These receivers have significantly more value later in the season, once they are able to be healthy. The owners that have those players are likely sick of having them, and Blackmon will be the hottest name on the market this week.
Charles Clay: It seems like I disagree with the general public on which tight ends are better for fantasy football. Unpredictable players like Kyle Rudolph seem to get started week after week, while guys like Coby Fleener and Chalres Clay are ignored. Yes there are some issues with productivity, but it is clear that Fleener and now Clay are part of what their teams are trying to do on offense. They are weapons that their respective young quarterbacks are looking for when they drop back to pass. In a PPR league, Clay has more value, and is a borderline top 10 tight end for me. If he’s available in your league, and you own Brandon Pettigrew, Jermaine Gresham, or Kyle Rudolph, a switch is in order.
Bye Week Fill-ins: Alex Smith, Ronnie Hillman, Roy Helu, Justin Blackmon, Donnie Avery, Coby Fleener.
